“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
Psalm 18:2 New International Version
Whenever I see this statue of Martin Luther standing tall at Concordia Seminary, I think of Luther’s famous response to the emperor’s challenge of what Luther had written concerning the Word of God and our faith in Jesus Christ. Luther said, “My conscience is captive to the Word of God. Thus I cannot and will not recant… Here I stand! I can do no other, so help me, God!” Luther stood firmly on the Word of God and upon his faith in Jesus Christ. He would not be deterred even though threatened by the emperor’s might.
Where do you stand? Do you stand firmly on the Word of God and your faith in Jesus? Or do you stand wherever public opinion or the culture dictate? Do you follow Jesus and place your faith in His redeeming love or do you follow human wisdom and your own strength or power?
David said it well, “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer.” It is the Lord who keeps His promises, it is the Lord whom I can trust, it is the Lord who will deliver me. Although the whole world be against me, what is that to me? For in the Lord we have found our stronghold and our place of security.
His Word will not change. His Word has power and can be trusted. His Word will deliver me from sin, death, and the devil. His Word is the rock upon which I stand.
“What is the world to me With all its vaunted pleasure
When You and You alone, Lord Jesus are my treasure!
You only dearest Lord, My soul’s delight shall be;
You are my peace, my rest. What is the world to me!”
