This statue of St. Francis of Assisi never changes as it graces the entrance to the cathedral that bears his name in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I took these pics early in the morning when there were no crowds. More people would surround him as the day progressed, some taking selfies with St Francis and others admiring the artist’s work. Some people probably ignored him.

Yet, his hand is always stretched out, inviting those who wander to come in.

And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”
Revelation 19:9 English Standard Version

John reminds us that the words of invitation to the marriage supper are the words of God. The outstretched arm of the One who died for us and rose for us is always stretched out to us, inviting us. The invitation reaches us no matter where we are found. Whether we are wandering in darkness or basking in the light, Jesus invites us into his presence.

I’m writing this devotion two weeks after my back surgery. The recovery has not been easy as anyone who has had their back fused will tell you. In these difficulties, the arm of Jesus has invited me into his presence. His arm has been extended to me through my family and in the prayers of the community.

It is a joy to know that the surgery was a success. I feel it in my body as I stand taller and straighter than I have for a long time. I heard it in the voice of my surgeon’s nurse this week as she reviewed his work. Most importantly, most of the pain that I have lived with for years is gone.

Jesus’ hand is reaching out to you today and inviting you into his presence. Join me in this simple prayer:

Jesus, your hand is extended to me and invites me into your presence. I often don’t know what that means for me and how grasping your hand will change my life, but today I take your hand. What a blessing! Amen
