He’s Not Going Anywhere

by Desiree Bustamante

When human promises fail, God’s presence remains.

“Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”
Deuteronomy 31:8 New Living Translation

“I’m not going anywhere.”

We say these words because we want the people we love to feel secure. In the moment, we sincerely believe we will always be there, that nothing will change or pull us away. Others make the same promise to us, and we want to trust that they mean it. Yet even heartfelt promises are made within human limits. Circumstances change. Relationships shift. People move, grow distant, change their minds, or are taken from us. Sometimes we fail to keep the promise. Sometimes someone else fails us. Even without harmful intent, “I’m not going anywhere” can remind us that human assurances are never completely reliable.

Our commitment to love faithfully, keep our word, and be present is important. Yet none of us can guarantee the future and no one, however loving or dependable, should be our security. God alone can make this promise without the possibility of failure. When He says He will never leave or abandon us, His words are not limited by circumstance, weakness, distance, or time. He is faithful and His presence is sure.

People may leave, and we may disappoint others despite our best intentions. Seasons, roles, places, and relationships may change. But God goes before us, stays beside us, and holds us through every change. His promise is not that life will remain the same, but that we will never face it without Him.

When the words “I’m not going anywhere” fail whether spoken by us or to us, we can grieve without losing hope. Our deepest security rests not in another person’s ability to stay, or even our own, but in the unwavering presence of the One who always will.
