“No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made Him known.”
John 1:18 New International Version

When I looked out the back window this morning, I could not see anything beyond our back yard.   The fields were covered with a dense fog and I was unable to see more than a hundred yards beyond our house.  But within minutes the sun rose and burned away the fog and I could see far across the valley all the way to the mountains in the distance.

How much this is like our view of God without the Son, our Lord Jesus Christ!  No one has ever seen God, for He is all powerful and all mysterious, hidden from our sinful and mortal eyes.  We only experience His terrifying power and harsh justice.  His love and mercy are completely hidden from our eyes.

But when our Lord Jesus came into this world, He made God known to us.  In Jesus we find that this powerful God is a God who loves us, who gave His only Son to die for us that we might be saved.  In Jesus Christ we see the glory of God and we do not need to be afraid, for in the cross our sins have been forgiven and we are able to see God face-to-face.  We can approach His throne of grace and know God for the loving Father that He truly is.  In Jesus Christ we can see clearly now!

Lord Jesus, thank you for showing us the Father, for opening the way to His mercy and love.  In You we find peace and true joy in the embrace of a loving God.  Thank you for making the Father known to us.  Amen.
