Who Are We?
You can listen to today’s devotion by clicking on this SoundCloud link.
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
Psalm 139:13-14 ESV
Identity thieves are everywhere. They seem to “level up” during the holiday season. As Believers, we know deep down that our identity is more than social security numbers, fingerprints and bank accounts. Sure, we wear a lot of hats and serve a number of roles. We are wives, husbands, sisters, brothers, moms, dads, grandparents, friends, bosses, coworkers… Beyond that, there are millions of other descriptive labels that attempt to define who we are. Even social media wants to determine our worth. But let’s take a deeper look at this. What if we were stripped of all that? Robbed of everything and everyone. (Job can testify here). Who are we then?
Lucky for us, our Father and Maker reminds us of the answer in scripture. In fact, it’s all over His Word! Here are just a few I rounded up for today:
“For God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”
Genesis 1:27 ESV“For we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
Eph 2:10 ESV“See what kind of love the father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.”
1 John 3:1 ESV“Do you know that you are God’s temple and that God’s spirit dwells in you?”
1 Cor. 3:16 ESV
It’s easy to fall into the patterns of this world. We can become consumed by who the world says we should be. God is so good and so very gracious in His pursuit of us. He doesn’t want us to forget who we are and why we were created. That’s why it’s important to remain rooted in His promises and in community with God’s people. We are chosen. We are His. Hold tightly to your true identity.
