Don’t forget.

How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever?
How long will You hide Your face from me?
How long shall I take counsel in my soul,
Having sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long will my enemy be exalted over me?
Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
Enlighten my eyes, or I will sleep the sleep of death,
And my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,”
And my adversaries will rejoice when I am shaken.
But I have trusted in Your loving kindness;
My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.
I will sing to the Lord,
Because He has dealt bountifully with me.
Psalm 13 New American Standard Version
Being overwhelmed is a horrible experience. The feeling of inadequacy, the tremendous list of things to do, the expectation of others that you know you can’t fulfill, all these things create weight that drags us under to drown us. The feeling of being overwhelmed prevents even the logical ordering of what to do to begin to escape. It’s a feeling of utter loneliness as well, since clearly no one can rescue.
But there is one who can rescue. He has already rescued us so many times. The feeling of being overwhelmed can start to lift with the sense of His presence. Sometimes that sense begins with the memory of past rescues or with the reminder of past blessings.
It is difficult work for me to not wallow in the present circumstances, to not give in to the weight and let myself drown. It can feel like lifting a thousand pounds to cry out for help. I often don’t cry out very well but I can still read David’s words, let them become my own, and use them to cry out for help.
Maybe if you are overwhelmed today you will join me in re-reading Psalm 13 right now. Let David’s confidence in God become our own. He has dealt bountifully with us. He hears and will rescue.
