Resting safely in the Rock.

We had had a wonderful hike with our close family friends through the Crags. It was a breathtaking fall day, but nearing the end of the hike we were tired and ready to rest our feet and enjoy the campfire, hot dogs and s’mores we had planned. That’s when the thunder started to roll and the raindrops quickened, stopping us on our journey. We doubled back on the trail to climb into this cleft in a rock we had passed. Inside of it, the kids felt safe and sheltered as the lightning struck all around us. We were all sheltered together as we paused to let the storm pass.
The storms that come as we are on our way in life sometimes appear when we are already worn out from travel. We are looking forward to a rest and sense we are nearing a place of nurishment when, CRACK! lightning strikes and sends us looking for shelter. Sometimes there is nothing to do but wait.
It’s comforting to know that even when we are tired, hungry, and feel stuck in the journey due to circumstances beyond our control, He holds us and keeps us safe in the waiting. We can run into the cleft of our Rock and wait it out in safety.
Oh, Rock of Ages, when the storms interrupt our journey and we’re tired and worn, may we run to you. May we be patient in the waiting, trusting that you’ll see us through to the end of the our travels. Amen.
“For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.” Psalm 27:5 New International Version
