“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!” Romans 11:33 English Standard Version.
Last weekend, Latashia and I went to Buena Vista for a hike. Being well into the fall season, most trees had already lost their leaves. I began to notice all of these trees that had leaves only on the very top remaining, with the rest of the tree already bare. I was reminded of this passage that was the subject of a sermon a few weeks back and began to think about my knowledge of God. How many of you think, or have thought, at one time or another that you could totally be a Biblical scholar, based on your knowledge of the Scriptures and God? I have.
The truth of the matter is, we know next to nothing about God. We know only what God has revealed to us, which he established is enough for us to know. What we know about God is just the tip of the iceberg, or in this case only the tree top. This is a welcome thing as God in his fullness, revealed to us, would certainly result in a very painful end. He is simply too overwhelmingly awesome for us to handle in our human, fallen, state. Isaiah is confronted by the Lord in chapter 6. The Lord is sitting on His throne, the following ensues…
“And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke. So I said: Woe is me, for I am undone!” Isaiah 6:4-5 New King James Version
Isaiah is saying that by seeing the Majesty of God, he was absolutely ruined. I am very glad that I am not able to comprehend even a sliver of who God is, for a God that I could fully comprehend would certainly be no God at all.
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!” Isaiah 6:3 New King James Version
