“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
Colossians 1:13-14 English Standard Version
Paul writes to the church of Colossae, encouraging them in their ministry and perseverance in the Lord. One might imagine a domain of darkness Paul refers to as a vast void, where there is nothingness and silence. Yet, in the world today and even when Paul was writing these words of encouragement, the domain of darkness might be more like constant and chaotic noise. Maybe it’s the news, or hate speech, or hurtful words between family members. Maybe this is harsh words at work, or the constant whining and complaining of children. It can sometimes feel like too much, that we can’t take the noise. We might feel blind in the darkness while our ears are overwhelmed.

Yet, Christ brings peace to the chaos. He not only pulls us out of the domain of darkness and into his kingdom of light, but labels us as his own in his new kingdom. He has spoken a new identity of beloved children to us, those redeemed in his name. Christ’s words of forgiveness are proclaimed to us, whispers of calm in the bombarding noise. Instead of leaving us in the chaos, God fills us with the sound of his voice through the words of his Son. We must only sit in silence and hear the words of our Lord.
