Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:23-24 English Standard Version
Do you ever find yourself grumbling about the day-to-day rhythm? Are there times when you feel the Sunday blues coming on before the start of another long work week? Maybe your weekly schedule is a bit overloaded, and stress has you consumed. You might be working through a life transition, or even recovering/on the mend after a challenge.
It’s fair to say that most of our meetings, appointments, chores, gatherings – fill in the blank here – are good and necessary items on our itinerary. It’s probably also accurate to admit that we have not quite mastered what Paul and James encourage as far as counting trials as joy and responding by rejoicing. If you’ve already aced that course, I’d love to chat!
We know where the problem lies though, right? The problem is rooted in our flesh. It’s our sinful heart that grumbles when things aren’t going exactly our way. It’s our short-term memory that gets in the way of an attitude of gratitude in every season. It’s our temporal body that reminds us we will have pain and we will have struggles before being made perfect in our eternal home.
The very good news is that we aren’t left here to figure it out on our own. God’s own Word reminds us to pause, to give thanks, to remember our purpose, AND, to keep in mind that we are serving Him in all we do. In addition to that, we have the Spirit with us, interceding and providing those timely nudges. We also have our brothers and sisters in Christ. What a privilege to serve our Lord and Savior in both the big and bold, but also the everyday. What a joy to be part of His discipleship team, training up others and pointing them to Jesus.
Kingdom work is our most pressing and precious calling. As evidenced by the saints, God can and will use every circumstance, every trial, every seemingly-mundane task for our good and His glory.
