Knowing When to Speak

“…Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry…”
James 1:19b New International Version
I have an old friend who is from Wisconsin. He liked to quote this rural proverb, “Don’t stir up manure when you don’t have to.” This proverb is much like the old cliche, “Let sleeping dogs lie.” In other words, wait for the right time to speak. Bringing things up in haste or anger or impatience can have some very unpleasant consequences!
James, our Lord’s half brother and the leader of the early church in Jerusalem, admonishes you and me to be “quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.” Important words for an age when it feels like everyone is quick to criticize and judge others over the slightest offense. Writers on blog posts often resort to name calling and defamation of character instead of respectful debate.
This behavior has no place for the believer. As the Lord Jesus showed restraint, respect, and even blessing when cursed, so you and I are to give others the benefit of the doubt and listen respectfully and lovingly whenever possible. Many people are hurting in their souls and desperately need someone who would listen and care for them. A well spoken word, a loving response, a little investment in time; are important in witnessing to others about the love of Jesus Christ!
How can a Christian love others in this way? Because our Lord Jesus first loved us and gave Himself for us, bearing our sins on the cross without complaining. “For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame…” Hebrews 12:2b. In Christ Jesus we can be the listening ears and hearts for a world that is crying out in pain… Amen.
