“Come, O house of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the Lord.”
Isaiah 2:5 New International Version
With apologies to T.S. Eliot, “let’s take a walk, then, you and I, while the moon is spread out against the sky.” It could be the voice of Jesus, inviting us for a walk on a path illuminated by the morning light of the setting moon. Can we walk on the light-strewn path upon the waters to the outstretched arms and smile of Jesus, Light of the world? ‘Yes’ is the correct answer.
The waters may be stormy, as in a couple of Gospel accounts. The waters may be smooth as glass. They may be dark and uninviting. They may be illuminated by the light of the moon early on an autumn morning. Perhaps we are alone. Perhaps we are lonely. Then we are captured and enraptured by the poetry of the Spirit as it lights the sky. We stop there, you and I, and snap a picture. Whether with a camera, a phone, or the memory made and stored away in our mind’s gallery.
God lifts us up in such moments. The poetry of the Spirit reminds us that Jesus the Way is walking the way with us. Always. Until the end of the age. The awe of nature’s beauty is made profound as the poetry of the Spirit whispers to our souls, “even the lighted moon speaks the Good News that God has illuminated the way from our hearts to his through Jesus, Light of the World.” Now there is something to make one thankful, don’t you think?
Let’s take a walk, you and I.
