“Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands formed the dry land.
Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!”
Psalm 95:1-6 English Standard Version
Can you imagine if the world could sing? I recently took a trip to Breckenridge and in the peace and quiet of the mountains, you can almost hear the harmonies of creation singing together in praises to God. When I hear this text, I think of singing in the community of Concordia Seminary, all joining together in different harmonies praising the Lord who made everything.
This world is beautiful. The beauty of this world is but a glimpse of the beauty and awe we will have in the new creation. We can see the mountains and know that the new creation will be like this, but restored. We will be with God, in his presence again, and all of the awe we have felt within this creation will pale in comparison to the awe we have of being with him. Our relationship will finally be restored.
This is not just a far off dream. Jesus Christ is ruling and reigning today, and this hope of being with him again affects the way we live our lives. This hope of a new creation allows us to revel and enjoy the creation that we have been given now. As my dad used to say when I was a kid, “Since our destination is assured, life is a journey.” I can almost hear the whole of the earth, kneeling before the Lord, our Maker, singing his praises.
