“To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.  O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me.”
Psalm 25:1-2 New International Version

I lift up my soul to you, God…  Do not let my enemies exult over me!

This is a desperate prayer, a prayer in the midst of stress and danger and fear.  Whom shall I trust when my enemies close in around me and all the world looks hopeless?  Where shall I go in my time of vulnerability?

As the Psalmist says in Psalm 121, “I lift up my eyes to the hills…”  When we are down, we look up.  We look up to a God who is greater than I, a God who came down to me in Jesus Christ, God’s Sacrifice for a sinful, desperate world.  At the very bottom of the pit, in the lowest place, we look up.

Are you in that low place right now?  Are your circumstances desperate and your fear off the charts?  Look up to Jesus.  Look up to His cross.  Turn your eyes to Him, to His grace, His mercy, His salvation, His deliverance.  You can trust Him, He will not let you be put to shame, He will not allow your enemies to triumph over you. Lift up your soul to Him, He can be trusted.

Lord, I lift up my soul to You.  I trust in You alone, not my circumstances, not my resources.  Deliver me, O Lord, for Your name’s sake.  Thank you, Lord Jesus, for hearing my prayer. Amen.
