“For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.”
– Acts 3:19-21, English Standard Version
I have recently discovered the new joy of building with my kids. Though destruction is still a big part of the fun, they are starting to learn how to put things together, how to build rather than crush. I sometimes have flashbacks to being an oldest child trying to protect my creations from little hands. But the end product isn’t the only point anymore. As a dad, their participation is part of the fun.
From the beginning, God has given humans as His creatures a role to play in cooperating with him in this world. For Adam and Eve, this was in ruling the world, multiplying within it and tending it. For us, we have now been invited to participate in God’s recreating work by the power of the Spirit. This is what Paul talks about when he describes the role he has played in Corinth: preaching the Gospel, tending to their spiritual welfare, and caring for them. God gives us a part to play, even if our clumsy, childish fingers sometimes make a mess of things. God makes us a part of his work. Ultimately, the building belongs to him, and Christ is the foundation. With that hope, may you and I take on the joyous task of participating in the good work with which God has gifted us.
