“Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given

you living water.”
John 4:10 New International Version

I never really thought about how much I need water until I got heat exhaustion.  Working in Guatemala on a mission trip I became overheated and depleted of water and electrolytes. It was a scary day with lasting effects.   Ever since that episode I need to watch my water consumption or I begin to feel sick to my stomach, my muscles cramp up, and I collapse.  In other words, water is essential to life and well being.

Jesus offered the woman at the well lifegiving water.  Water that would quench the thirsting of her soul.  Water that washes away her sin.  Water that would give her eternal life.  The woman is confused by Jesus’ words.  She doesn’t understand what He is offering her.  But when she grasps that Jesus is the Savior, the Messiah, the Lord, she not only follows Jesus, but tells all her townspeople about Him.

Without the living water of Jesus, you will die.  Not just physically, but you will die spiritually and forever.  Without the quenching water of baptism and the Word, there is no life forever, no forgiveness of sins, no salvation from sin, death, and the devil.  But in Jesus there is life and healing and peace and joy.  There is life for the thirstiest soul and assurance of forgiveness for all who would admit their thirst.    And Jesus offers His living water freely and without cost and without limit.  There is more than enough living water for the deadliest drought!

Jesus, thank you for your living water.  Come and quench the thirsting of my soul.  I find my life in you alone.  Amen.
