“The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork…
The law of the Lord is perfect
reviving the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure,
making wise the simple;
the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure,
enlightening the eyes…”
Psalm 19:1, 7-8 English Standard Version
Living in the beautiful state of Colorado, I often feel like I am in a painting. I see the beautiful mountains, the unending sky, the clouds that take on beautiful shapes and colors. I look around and I see a God who has painted the world with a careful and sure hand. “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” This verse is a common one for meditating out in Creation, seeing the beauty of what God has made, but that is not where the Psalm ends.
“The law of the Lord is perfect… the precepts of the Lord are right… the commandment of the Lord is pure…” (emphasis added) We can look around and know that there is a God. But who is this God? Who is he to me? The Psalmist talks about how the law of the Lord is good, and it shapes the way for us to live in the world. We know God through his Son, Jesus Christ. In him, the God and Creator of the Universe is revealed to us in a tangible way. Not only does God bless us with the beauty of Creation, but he gives himself in the person of Jesus for our sake.
We know God is good because Jesus is good. We know we will be restored to the Father because the Son tells us it is so. Look around and see the goodness of God, but look to Jesus to see the work of his hand. Look to Jesus to see his love, given and shed for you.
