Beyond coping mechanisms.

“In them he has set a tent for the sun,
which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
and its circuit to the end of them,
and there is nothing hidden from its heat.”
Psalm 19:4-6 English Standard Version
Nobody could confuse this prison artwork with the warmth of the sun. The sun brings a heat that nothing on earth compares to. Stuck in his prison, someone drew this fireplace on a cold steel wall. Beautiful as it is, there is no warmth except in our minds. In my own life I have developed coping mechanisms that only bring temporary relief. They distract me from the difficulties around me, but they don’t provide any lasting warmth.
In Psalm 19 the Psalmist tells me that the Law of the Lord is like the sun. Nothing can hide from it. God’s Word is not a coping mechanism. It is, in my life, like the warm sun. While I still run to my coping mechanisms out of habit, God continues to remind me that I will only find lasting peace in Him, in His Word.
“The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure,
making wise the simple;
the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart”
Psalm 19:6-8 English Standard Version
He revives my soul. He brings wisdom to difficult places. He brings peace to my weary heart. It’s time to leave the prison and come into the full light and warmth of His Word.
