One morning, not to long ago, I was driving my son to school. Actually, that’s what I do almost every day. I drive three different children to three separate schools, at various start times, and then later in the day I travel again to pick them all up. It’s easy to get into a mental routine, focusing on what time it is and the immediate traffic around me. On this particular morning I was not in the best of moods. It may have been because we were running late, or the drivers around me were acting unpredictably. Perhaps I was thinking about the many tasks that needed to get accomplished that day and getting overwhelmed. All of these scenarios are possible because they all tend to happen on a daily basis. In addition it is likely that my son was also “downloading” his morning observations to me as I worked to un-clutter my own mind and listen.

The morning I’m recalling became suddenly different when we were in a line of cars and I glanced up. At that moment I was awed by the beauty of the mountains. As you can see in the picture, the sun had risen just enough to light up the peaks where snow had fallen the night before. I looked up and remembered the beauty of God’s creation all around me. My thoughts moved away from the daily grind and immediately to the Creator of everything. That is why I have a picture from that day, I asked my son to grab my phone and take this picture. The verse that came to mind that morning was this,

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.”
Psalm 121:1-2 New International Version

This is a song of ascent written by David. It quickly reminds us to look to God who will meet all of our needs. I love that David too raised his eyes to God’s creation for this reminder. The God who created these mountains easily helps us surpass any earthly difficulty. Look up and praise Him!
