“My heart has heard you say, ‘Come and talk with me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’”
Psalm 27:8 New Living Translation
There is something about the invitation to sit down and have a conversation with someone that is both appealing and frightening. I’m writing about the kind of conversation you have with a person over coffee in their living room or at a coffee shop, the kind of conversation that happens when someone can look another person in the eye.
We want connections with other people, connections that go deeper than a text message or IM. We want to hear someone’s voice. We want to see their body language in response to something we say. We want to feel a connection that runs deeper than the simple, “Hi, how are you?” “Good, and how are you?” God wired us for connection. We long to have a friend with whom we can share our joys and sorrows, even our deepest disappointments and sins.
Yet, we have come to believe that people aren’t safe, and maybe for good reason. We might long to have a face-to-face conversation with another human being, but we also find it frightening to think what another person might do with our secrets. We might risk getting together with another person but feel the temptation to keep things on a superficial level.
King David heard God’s invitation to his heart to have a conversation with him, to seek his face. David’s reponse? “Lord, I’m coming!” This same God speaks to your heart and invites you to have a conversation with him. The beauty of this conversation is that it is anointed with the blood of Jesus, in other words, you and I can come to God with EVERYTHING!!! He will not condemn us. He will not blab our secrets to our neighbor.
He simply wants to hear what’s on our heart, a heart that has been redeemed and made holy in Christ. May we respond like David, “Lord, I’m coming!”
