“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.  Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 English Standard Version

I’m in month 10 of a year-long study, penned by Max Lucado, that focuses on the heart of Jesus. One lesson in particular continues to stick with me. Lucado shares that he was challenged years ago to read through the well-known 1 Corinthians 13 passage. But this time, to read it out loud, replacing the word “love” with your own name. Go for it…

How was it? I think the first time I finished, I froze — stunned and a little sad. If I were handed an evaluation set against this standard, I would be in serious trouble. As Followers of Christ, we know what love is and we know who love is because He first loved us. While we were still sinners, God sent His son to die for us, replacing our sin-laden record with His righteousness. God is love. Jesus is the standard. He passes the test with flying colors. He aces the performance review, bringing it to a level we cannot attain.

But it certainly doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. It just means we desperately need His expert, perfect guidance. It’s why we are to be in the Word, which provides a clear reminder of His great love for us and how He loved/served others first. We should be constant in prayer, quick to confess and seek wisdom for every circumstance. He is our mentor and guide in all things. Thanks be to God!
