Loved Much

“Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.”

Luke 7:47 English Standard Version

He’s a pro at the parable; an expert in the art of asking questions; perfectly poised with the right words. He knew His audience — whether they were well-versed in religion, avid followers or brand-new to His teaching. He knew what they needed. His love for His people was and is and always will be unparalleled.

We have entered the season of love. Jesus spent every day of His earthly existence (and beyond) in loving service to those around Him. He tailored each encounter meticulously and intentionally. No matter your involvement or reason for encountering the Messiah, He knows your heart. He knew you would be there — as a witness, as a curious bystander, as a doubter or as one healed and transformed. We’re talking both about Biblical times and now.

In our passage today, we see two different versions of love on display. We also know there are those in attendance who needed to hear and see both. The Pharisee invited Jesus to His house and couldn’t believe that Jesus would associate himself with the sinful woman that wandered in with her jar. If He really knew her, He wouldn’t waste His time on her. As we know, Jesus concerns Himself most with the people who know their shortcomings and seek freedom via redemption of sins from the Savior — people like you and me. He came to seek and save the lost. He really knows us and loves us anyway.

So let’s live and love like those who have been forgiven much, in reverent service to the One who first loved us.
