Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 8:12 English Standard Version
Like many others, we were able to catch the wonder and beauty of the Northern Lights earlier this month. What a wonder! Particles from the sun collide with gases from the atmosphere. This creates a stunning display in the night sky. My husband captured this picture from our backyard that evening.
In the Bible, we see light used in a very literal sense and a dynamic literary device. Today, we’ll study these powerful words to enlighten our hearts as we prepare for the upcoming season of Advent.
- And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. Genesis 1:3, ESV
- “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105, ESV
- “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.” Isaiah 60:1, ESV
- “The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.” Matthew 4:16, ESV
- “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16, ESV
Our Lord is and always was the light of the world. At His command, everything came to be. At His will, His son came into this world so that we would no longer walk in darkness. This season is one of hope, peace, joy and love as we celebrate his first coming and anticipate His return. Go, let your light shine before others!
