“Remember the wonderful works he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered.”

1 Chronicles 16:12. New Revised Standard Version

I recently attended a birthday party for someone born in 1986.  There was a banner listing some of the notable things of that year, things the guest of honor would identify with.  Enlarge the picture and check out the things listed.  Do any of those things spark your memory?  Do you think of people connected to those memories?  What kinds of emotions are connected with those memories?  Do any ‘stories’ from your life come to mind?

Memories brought to life by occasions of that sort can easily drift back into ‘forgotten land’ as present-day life claims us again.  King David of Old Testament fame encouraged the people not to forget, but remember instead.  He had in mind something, and someone, quite specific.  “Remember the wonderful works he (God) has done….”  David did not have random memories about the Lord.  He was thinking of the many ways God had taken care of the people, the always wonderful and sometimes miraculous things the Lord had done for them.

Centuries later, the Apostle Peter would write, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (I Peter 2:9).  It was vital for Peter that God’s people remember these truths.  Look at what the Lord has done!  For you, always for you.  Remember.  Remember what the Lord did for us in Christ Jesus.  God’s actions are always for us, for our good.  Think on David’s words today, and Peter’s as well.  The Holy Spirit will stir your own memory of your journey with the Lord.  He will whisper the sweet things of his love for you.
