“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

– Ephesians 2:10, English Standard Version

We rightly emphasize “For by grace you have been saved” – this is the good news! But there is a second piece of good news in Ephesians 2 that I find gives my life great meaning and purpose. That is that we are created for good works, which God has prepared for us.

I sometimes wonder what my work means, anyway. Are all the little things that I do in a day really worth it? Are my efforts of any value? I might feel like a little kid playing at work compared to what God is capable of. But I know that as a dad, I find great delight when I see my boys at work, putting their effort toward something. I think God is the same way. He knows we need purpose. He knows we need work to do – that’s how he created us, after all! So he gives us that purpose, our own gifts for the task, and a job to do. In the end, it’s all His, so we don’t need to worry if it’s in vain. Instead, we just do it, that whatever work God has prepared for us to do would be done with joy.

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might…”

– Ecclesiastes 9:10a, English Standard Version
