God Pulls Us Out of the Mess

“But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven.”
Colossians 1:22-23a English Standard Version

As I sit here in my messy house, I think of all the things that are piling up. There’s some things that are literal, like when my children take all of the couch cushions off to make a fort and stack all of the books we own inside. There’s the things that pile up mentally, homework, school work, keeping up with finances, household chores. Maybe you think, “If only there were three more of me, then I could get it all done.” Maybe you feel this way sometimes, or just feel overwhelmed by the world. We might think that we have to pick ourselves up and keep going in order for things to feel complete.

Yet, this is not the way God works. God meets us in our mess. He does not expect us to fix ourselves, in fact he knows that we cannot. He sends his Son, Jesus Christ, to make us blameless before God. He takes our mess and makes it his own, so that we might be fully reconciled and in a right relationship with him.

This is the Gospel that we profess. This is the Gospel that is established and firm, an anchor we can hold onto. Within our mess, Jesus pulls us up, wipes us off, and presents us blameless before the Father.

Praise be to God!
