“Later, after they crossed to the other side of the lake, the disciples discovered they had forgotten to bring any bread. ‘Watch out!’ Jesus warned them. ‘Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’ At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn’t brought any bread. Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said, ‘You have so little faith! Why are you arguing with each other about having no bread? Don’t you understand even yet? Don’t you remember the 5,000 I fed with five loaves, and the baskets of leftovers you picked up? Or the 4,000 I fed with seven loaves, and the large baskets of leftovers you picked up?’”
Matthew 16:7-10 New Living Translation

Fall is the season of harvest. Farmers gather their crops every year hoping they will have enough to sell, feed their livestock and ultimately, their families.

Although Jesus was warning the disciples to beware of the deceptive teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees, they were worried about not having enough bread. Jesus always provided for their needs, yet the disciples were concerned about their next meal.

Jesus repeatedly proved to His disciples that they would always have abundance with Him. In every miracle, He provided generously. He transformed water into around 120 gallons of wine. He fed 5,000 with five loaves and two fish and fed 4,000 with seven loaves and a few fish. And there were leftovers! More than once, Jesus blessed Peter with more fish than his nets could hold.

While Christ’s miracles revealed His compassionate provision for His disciples on earth, He longed for them to believe that He would provide for them forever. He also illustrated to the Pharisees that having a personal relationship with God was more than enough, without all the additional rules they created around God’s law.

You can trust that Christ will provide for you in every way. He will never abandon you. He is more than enough!
