God Never Sleeps

It seems like all we do anymore is adjust to a new reality that impacts our lives.
Technology has reshaped the way we communicate with each other. Even when we go to a restaurant, we have our cell phones sitting on the table next to us, checking our texts, viewing the latest weather report, and keeping up on world news. (Growing up the closest thing I had to a cell phone was a twenty foot cord attached to our rotary dial telephone.)
A two-year pandemic has changed the DNA of our lives. We think differently and we act differently because of a virus that invaded out world.
And now, once again, there is the uncertainty of war as Russia invades the Ukraine. Some of us reading this devotion are glued to our news feeds to see what’s happening moment by moment. Others of us are concerned about what these events will mean for our children and grandchildren.
Once again, there is uncertainty about the future. How do we navigate this uncertainty?
“[The Lord] will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.”
Psalm 121:3-4 English Standard Version
Psalm 121 is a Psalm of Ascent. Jewish pilgrims sang this song as they made their way to Jerusalem to celebrate God’s redeeming love for his people. I imagine that life changing events also altered their lives. How many of those pilgrims had experienced the loss of someone they loved, a financial disaster, or maybe even war as they made their way to worship?
God doesn’t sleep. The covenant God, Yahweh, does not sleep. Six times in these eight verses of Psalm 121 the write states that God is the keeper and is guarding his people. When we look back over the past and the life changing events we’ve already experienced, we see the truth of this statement. God guards his people.
We navigate the unknown through faith in Jesus. He has been with us in the past, now walks beside us, and will be there for us in the future no matter what happens. His cross is proof of this promise.
