As God’s children, he will not let us out of his sight.

Have mercy on me, O God! Have mercy on me!
For in you I have taken shelter.
In the shadow of your wings
I take shelter until trouble passes.
Psalm 57:1 New English Translation
I don’t remember seeing wood ducks in Eugene’s Delta Ponds when I was growing up, but I saw this mother wood duck and ducklings often as I walked around these same ponds. It felt like she was bragging about her kids. That’s what moms do.
Yet it didn’t surprise me that her ducklings acted like children. They were at her side one moment, then paddling off the next. I don’t know if her heart raced faster when they wandered off or she remained calm, but her children could trust her presence. She was always close. She didn’t let them out of her sight.
From the day the Holy Spirit leads us to Jesus until the day we die, we live as God’s children. The Bible never calls us “the teenagers of God,” or “the adults of God.” Yes, the Bible talks about us growing in maturity this side of eternity, but we will always remain his children.
Like this mother wood duck, God never lets us out of his sight. He knows the dangers we face. He knows when to let us wander and when to draw us close. He knows that there will be times when we don’t hear his voice and other times when we’ll cling to his every word. He is always there. He guarantees his presence when his Son states that he is with us to that day the earth stops spinning (Matthew 28:20).
We are never out of God’s sight.
