The Lord is my shepherd;
    I have all that I need.
He lets me rest in green meadows;
    he leads me beside peaceful streams.
     He renews my strength.
He guides me along right paths,
    bringing honor to his name.”

Psalm 23: 1-3 New Living Translation

Psalm 23 is a very comforting psalm for believers in Christ. There are even those, who don’t believe in Jesus, who will print this psalm, on a funeral memorial folder, when a loved one dies.

Much of this psalm reveals how the Good Shepherd provides for us, His sheep. He gives us food, water, rest, strength, courage, and deliverance from evil. He is protector, and guide, on our life’s journey. When we stray from Christ’s path He redirects our steps. His love will pursue us throughout all of our days. Our Lord and Savior freely gives amazing blessings to us, and this psalm reveals His eternal devotion to those who follow Him.

Yet, it’s not all about us. While Christ does freely give his children all His promised blessings, because of His great love for us, everything He does for us is for “bringing honor to His name.” Everything Christ blesses us with, and the plans He creates for each of us, are for His glory and honor, not ours. We are to travel life’s road in fellowship with Jesus all the days of our life, and to honor His name in all we do. This is His utmost desire.

“Then those who feared the Lord spoke with each other, and the Lord listened to what they said. In his presence, a scroll of remembrance was written to record the names of those who feared him and always thought about the honor of his name.”
