Asking Questions When Life Doesn’t Make Sense.
Have you ever gone to a restaurant and ordered a dish you thought was going to be great, only to be disappointed by what it actually was? It is the worst! It has happened to me and all I can do is look at the other meals that people ordered and wished I had not ordered what I did. In today’s image, I was actually happy with the dish, but a bit less happy with the beverage. My face says it all.
Sadly, life can be like that often times. We can find ourselves in situations that we certainly had not planned on being in: Perhaps a failed marriage, perhaps being fired from a job, perhaps an illness, and so on. What do we do with that? What do we do when things are not what we had hoped for?
Well, for some answers, let’s go back to the restaurant: When the dish isn’t what you hoped for, you have some options:
- Return the food! Most diners would never do this, because they feel that they are the one that ordered it, so no complaining. Other diners do this all the time!
- Eat it without complaint. I also think most diners do this. It may not be the best, but it is good enough.
- Eat it with lots of complaint! Some diners do this and it makes the other diners lose enjoyment in their meal.
OK, can this help us with what to do when things are not as we had hoped? Psalm 62:8 says,
“Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.”

Be honest with God about your disappointment, He can handle it! Trust that God’s wisdom far exceeds your wisdom. Look to Christ rather than what is right in front of you.
Today’s devotion isn’t about giving you the answers to life’s problems, but it does help you ask some questions, explore your options, and point you to the source of truth: God in His Word and the promises fulfilled in our Savior Jesus! I pray that you find comfort even when things are not as you had hoped!
