“Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
Luke 2:15b New International Version
The shepherds got it right on that first Christmas Eve. When confronted by angels of God, they were first terrified and then ecstatic with joy. They heard the good news, “I bring you good news of great joy for all people. For to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior who is Christ the Lord.”
After they heard the good news, they acted upon it. They believed the Lord and went and found the Christ child. They worshiped Him and then spread the good news of Jesus as our Savior and Lord. And when they returned to their shepherding work, they continued to glorify and praise God for all that they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them.
Tonight we imitate the shepherds. We hear the good news that a Savior, Christ the Lord is born for us. It both terrifies us and delights us to know that in the midst of the darkness of our sin, God sent His Son Jesus to save us. We come and worship Him tonight and then we spread the good news of His salvation to all who would listen. We continue to glorify and praise Him for all that we have heard and seen, straight from the Word of God.
We join with millions of other believers to kneel at the manger and praise God for His great gift of Jesus. And we sing:
“Oh, come, let us adore Him,
Oh, come , let us adore Him,
Oh come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord!”
May the Lord bless you wherever you may be this night, with a vision of angels and the good news of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord! God bless us, everyone! Amen!
