My next door neighbor, Dave, had every book Dr. Seuss wrote. My favorite was Green Eggs and Ham.

Do you like
Green eggs and ham

I do not like them,
Sam-I-am.
I do not like
Green eggs and ham.

Oh the places I went when reading these books, especially for a guy who struggled to read.

There is a sense of adventure when you read a Dr. Seuss book. Why don’t we have same sense of wonder when we read the Bible?

“Every Scripture passage is inspired by God. All of them are useful for teaching, pointing out errors, correcting people, and training them for a life that has God’s approval.”
2 Timothy 3:16 God’s Word to the Nations

Shouldn’t the first words in this verse strike a sense of wonder in us? Every passage of the Bible has been breathed out by God. If it has been breathed out by God, shouldn’t we approach Scripture with a sense of amazement? God speaks to us. God reveals his heart to us. God tells us how important we are to him.

As the story of Green Eggs and Ham progresses, the speaker of the poem states his adamant denial that he will ever eat green eggs and ham until, to get rid of Sam-I-Am, he eats them and loves them.

We often approach the Scriptures like this person refusing to eat the words that give us life. However, once we’ve tasted the goodness of God in the Bible, we desire to eat these words wherever we are.

So I will eat them in a box.
And I will eat them with a fox.
And I will eat them in a house.
And I will eat them with a mouse.
And I will eat them here and there.
Say! I will eat them anywhere!

As the speaker found delight in green eggs and ham may we delight in the delicious words of God, the word that will always point us to Jesus.
