“… He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.”
Psalm 40:2b
It’s one of the perennial favorites at Vacation Bible School, “The wise man built his house upon the rock…” Jesus’ story, about the wise man who built his house upon the rock and the foolish man who built his house upon the sand, is much more than a fun children’s song.
It expresses the invaluable truth that the only permanent basis for life is in our Lord Jesus Christ. Everything else is temporary, shifting like sand. David, in Psalm 40, expresses the same thought, “He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.” Fortune, fame, and friends all left David in the lurch. What sustained him was his abiding faith in the promises of God and His salvation.
What have you been depending on in this life? Good health? Money? Good friends? Success? Good looks? All is transient, temporary, and cannot save you in the time of trouble. Only Jesus is dependable. Only Jesus is eternal. Only Jesus is faithful. Only Jesus can save you!
If you have been building your life on anything, or anyone, other than our Lord Jesus, repent today and turn to Him. When the storms of life come, He will save you. When all others desert you, He will not leave you. When even death overtakes you, He is your Life!
Heavenly Father, forgive me for building my life on anything but You. Thank you that you are not only the Rock, but you have placed me securely with You. Thank you for saving me and never leaving me. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
