“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Acts 4:12 English Standard Version
There are a number of one-way streets in our small town. Most people recognize the signs, pay attention and obey the rules of the road. Every once in awhile though, someone makes a mistake and ends up going the wrong way. Has that ever happened to you? Maybe in a big or new city? I know I’ve made that unfortunate error!
One way. Pretty self-explanatory, right? This is the way. Follow it. Sounds a lot like Isaiah 30:21. And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. The Lord is clear in His Words to us. In Romans, we are told that confessing with our mouth and believing in our heart leads to salvation. In John, we read that whoever believes in him is not condemned. Our verse today from Acts is even more straightforward. There is salvation in no one else.
It’s a one-way road. Scratch that. It’s an only-way road. Jesus is the Way. We know this to be absolute truth. Yet, not unlike His disciples, we also know there are moments (maybe even months or years) of waywardness when it comes to walking the straight and narrow. First and foremost, we have to know that we are flawed. We weren’t created that way. Sin hardwired our faultiness. But in our imperfect deficiencies, we were given perfect and complete grace through Jesus. God knew we needed saving. He had that plan in motion from the beginning. He continues to remind us through His Word and Spirit the way we should go. When necessary, He redirects us with love and mercy, just like a good father.
Lord, we are often distracted by the world and the many wrong ways. Keep us fixed on you so that we continue to hear your voice and follow the way we should go.
