Sharing the truth of God with future generations.

When my daughter was young, we took a trip that included visiting her great-grandfather in Bozeman, Montana. He was an imposing man of German descent, had one glass eye, was proud, and extremely intelligent. Some might have found him intimidating, but he and my daughter became quick friends. I took this picture during our trip to Yellowstone National Park. The two had gone ahead and I could not resist the picturesque moment.

I do not know what they were talking about, or whether they spoke at all. I do know that they enjoyed one another’s company as they walked along observing God’s amazing creation.

If they had been talking, he could have been telling her the many stories of her family’s past, such as the story of how his grandfather led a revolution in Germany, and when it did not succeed he was smuggled to America. This same man knew Abraham Lincoln, and fought in the Civil War. He could have spoken of his own stories as a soldier in World War II. These and other stories of heritage were well known and often spoken of in our family. Our heritage has shaped who we are.

 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old: Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.
Psalm 78:2-4 English Standard Version

God desires for us to share our heritage in Him with our children and grandchildren. He wants us to speak of all He has done for as long as we live. As we share these stories it also shapes the hearts and lives of others. We are teaching them who they are, and to whom they belong.

If you continue to read the psalm above, you’ll discover that the psalmist spoke of their mistakes, and how God in His mercy saved them. As we tell the story of God, may we too be honest about our errors and God’s redemption.
