Feeling Small

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”
Psalm 139:13-16 English Standard Version
I’ve had dogs my whole life, and they’ve come in all different sizes. Our current dog, Hagrid, is the smallest dog I’ve ever owned. He has not hit ten pounds in his life- he tops out at nine point something. My daughter just got this toy horse for her birthday, and my dog standing next to it in the living room made me laugh: the horse is taller than he is!
But my dog never seems to have a problem with his size. He doesn’t worry about being small. He likes to jump up wherever he wants, including onto the bed to lay on top of me while we sleep. He’ll go running and barking after a deer as if he is big and scary.
Sometimes I wish I had his confidence. There are some situations in which I feel confident and sure of myself. And certainly there are times in our lives when we maybe feel overly important! But maybe you are like me in that there are also times when I feel small, or insignificant, or invisible. It’s not a good feeling.
Fortunately, we are not insignificant to God. As Psalm 139 (one of my favorites) says, God knew us in the depths before we were even born. He knows us inside and out. And not only does He know us, He loves us enough that He sent His Son Jesus to die for us. So let us have the confidence of tiny Hagrid knowing that we are known and loved!
