“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.
Luke 1:38 New International Version (NIV)
We weren’t good at “family planning.” We would start talking about having children, but each arrived at a time other than what we’d planned. In fact, one came along after we decided we’d wait until my husband successfully changed jobs, in order to avoid health insurance hassles. Surprise!
Mary had plans. She was a teenaged virgin, engaged to marry Joseph. Joseph was preparing a home for his bride. Everything was moving along in step with the societal traditions of the time.
One day, everything changed, and the immaculate conception of Jesus happened. And Mary, knowing the earthly consequences of this miracle, responded with a peaceful obedience to God, despite the threat of divorce or being stoned to death.
“My soul glorifies the Lord
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.“
Luke 1:46b-48 NIV
Throughout life, we dream and make plans for future events. Some, like going out to dinner or attending a sports or cultural event, happen without a hitch. Some plans change due to circumstances beyond our control. Some dreams come true, while others are shattered.
If you are heading towards Christmas with a heavy heart, or if you are struggling with your relationship with God, be assured that you can take it all to him. If you don’t think you know how to pray “correctly,” start by talking. Talk about anything. From the blessings to the shattered dreams, he will listen to it all. Open your heart, with its pain and struggles, and God will be there to comfort you.
“Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.”
2 Thessalonians 3:16 NIV
