Peace Be to You!

More Peace, Less Irritation

Peace is a premium right now. I’m finding myself writing about how to find and hold onto peace. The distractions and irritations creep in and they color my attitude. Each time I think I have this bad attitude mastered, the negative nature creeps back in. Then I’m irritated at my irritation. What a cycle!

In my experience, re-centering on God is the only solution for the irritation.

“For God alone my soul waits in silence...” Psalm 62:1 English Standard Version

Silence. That’s a premium right now in our house and in my world. How do I find silence? What if the silence is more about our soul being silent, not my externals? If my soul can be quiet and re-center on God, the irritation and distraction melt away. True rest can only be found in God’s peace.

“And he said, ‘My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’” Exodus 33:14 English Standard Version

His presence is the key to rest. I will be the first to tell you I have done a terrible job this year of getting into God’s presence. Social media, news, and election information are so loud right now. My kids are in sports and school so I’ve been concerned about them being able to finish the year. I also have a senior in high school who will graduate in December, so we’re busy planning. There are so many reasons I could give for my distraction, but what I find is that nothing goes as smoothly and I’m more anxious about the next “thing” when I’m not at peace.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” John 14:27 English Standard Version

My goal from now to the end of the year is when I feel distracted or irritated, to internally stop and impose silence on my soul. Then let God come and do what He does best, invade my space.

Peace be to you!
