There is Power in the Wind

“I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.”
Romans 1:16  New International Version

A few days ago, the wind blew pretty hard where I live.  The night too, for that matter.  I forgot to put away my patio umbrella.  Can you tell?  At least I have 7 months before I need a new one.

There is power in wind.  We know that because every time there is a huge storm in Florida, Floridians are warned to get out of the state to escape the wind and its devastating effects.  As they exit, every weather forecaster in the country is passing them, heading to Florida to get blown around in the wind while we watch.  Do you ever wonder, as I do, ‘Why in the world am I watching these crazy people?’

The wind of God’s Spirit hovered over the face of the deep after God created the earth and before he arranged it in the form we enjoy today.  There is power in the wind.  The breath of God’s Spirit entered a human-like sand sculpture, and man became a living being.  There is power in the wind.  The wind of God’s Spirit guided the Prophets of old as they proclaimed the Word of God to his people.  There is power in the wind. Jesus breathed on his disciples as they huddled in fear in a room behind locked doors.  As He did so, he said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”  There is power in the wind.  The Spirit blew out of a house and through the streets of Jerusalem, and crowds gathered and Peter, filled with the Spirit, proclaimed Jesus as Lord.  There is power in the wind.  The Spirit of the Living God has blown through the ages as the Church proclaimed the Gospel.  There is power in the wind.

The Spirit of God energizes the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  There is salvation there.  We are saved and free through the Gospel.  There is power in the wind.  That Spirit wind points us to Jesus.
