“Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours.”
1 Chronicles 29:11a English Standard Version
This is South Falls pouring out a huge amount of water in early January. The sound of its roar and the beauty of its majesty are breathtaking. To stand under the falls is to experience amazing power and might!
As I look at the power and vastness of nature, the mighty oceans, the majestic mountains, powerful earthquakes and storms, I am awed at God’s handiwork. And when I look up at night I am amazed at the seemingly infinite universe and the thousands of stars and galaxies.
Amazing as this complex and breathtaking universe is, these things of nature are not the source of power and might. For there is a God who with a spoken Word created it all and preserves it day by day. This powerful and mighty God can do anything He pleases. No one or anything can stand before Him.
And yet this almighty, powerful Creator not only created you and me, but when we fell into sin, sent His own Son to redeem us. In His mercy, for He is not only powerful but merciful, He sacrificed the Lord Jesus to pay the debt of our rebellion and sin. In His mercy the Lord did not destroy us as He did in His mighty flood, but He came to save you and me.
And so as we stand in awe of God’s power and might, we are even more overwhelmed by His grace and love. For as any good parent knows, it is not enough to be strong and authoritative, but we must also have mercy and grace and love.
Heavenly Father, thank you for creating this awesome world. Thank you for directing and preserving all things. But especially we give you thanks for sending Your own Son, our Lord Jesus, to redeem us and save us. Thank you for your steadfast love and mercy. Amen.
