“Two are better than one….”
Ecclesiastes 4:9a English Standard Version
Mick is a believer who is legally blind after a head injury 9 years ago. Living alone, Mick spent much of his time wood carving and praying and meditating on God’s Word. Twice a week for seven years, Mick and I have prayed for the Lord to bring him a godly partner, a wife who would share his passion for witnessing of their faith in Jesus and ministering to others. And then two months ago, Lois came down his driveway….
Here are Mick and Lois on their wedding day, rejoicing in God’s love and mercy in bringing them together. Mick is explaining how first he carved a single horse responding to the Master’s hand, learning to follow His direction. Then he explains that he carved two horses, willingly yoked together, pulling together under the Master’s hand. And we are all rejoicing that although a single draft horse can pull eight thousand pounds by himself, two horses together can pull four times that amount!
The Lord made us for partnership one with another. This not only pertains to marriage and family, but also speaks of our need for relationship with God. You and I were made to be yoked with Jesus Christ, to allow Him to lead us and guide us and walk alongside us. Our rebellious sinful nature pretends that it needs no one, that I can exist on my own. But God designed us to submit to Him, to His love and His ways. It is only in Him that we find our true identity, our true calling.
As it further says in Ecclesiastes, “Two are better than one… and a threefold cord is not easily broken.” When two are joined together in Jesus, God can do great things!
