“Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, ‘Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark; it is for every beast of the earth. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.’ And God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.’”
Genesis 9:8-16 English Standard Version

It is still amazing to me how excited everyone seems to get when they see a rainbow. The beauty is incredible, and the joy it brings is remarkable. Even when so much time has passed from when God made his covenant to Noah, we can see a rainbow to this day and think of the promise he made. God’s promises outlast time, and we can remember them again and again. We can look back on this promise every time we hear stories of raging floods or other natural disasters, and know this promise that God made to his people.

We also can remember the promises of Christ in other things we see. We see a cross, and we think of the ultimate sacrifice that he made in our stead, for our redemption. We see a font full of water, or a shell, or a dove, and think of the promises that were made to us in our baptisms, that we are made a part of God’s family and made his own through this water.

Each new day, there are ways to remember the promises of God. We see it in the sky, we see it in symbols, and we can see it in each other. We as Christians have a responsibility to remind our brothers and sisters in Christ of the promises of God. So today I am reminding you that Christ died and rose from the dead for you and promises you redemption and belonging in him.
