Seeing in Full

The word “reflection” has two main meanings:
- The throwing back by a body or surface of light, heat, or sound without absorbing
- Serious thought or consideration.
I plan on using both meanings for today’s devotion! I worry that many of us don’t take time to reflect. Reflect on life, relationships, truths, or even ourselves. It could be because life is pretty busy and we typically have many demands on our time. But I think we also just don’t want to put in the effort it takes to reflect.
Our image for consideration today is one of my family members and his daughter holding hands and looking upon a lake. It is a great photo and captures the unique relationship of father to daughter.
If you have ever looked out upon water, you most likely have seen a reflection. Be it clouds, trees, or even people, the surface of the water reflects what is around it.
There is a verse, towards the end of the famous “love chapter” that is 1 Corinthians 13, verse 12, where we read,
“For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love”.
English Standard Version
In this life, we see in a mirror dimly, a reflection of what will be, of what should be. For me, a lot of the reflecting I do involves God’s presence in this world. By pondering that thought, it of course has something profound to say about life, relationships, truths and myself.
Do you find yourself in moments of holy reflection? Do you think about the gift of life and how to use it? Do you think about God’s will and His plan for you and those that you love?
I’m sure both my brother and his daughter cherish this image for an array of reasons, but I find the most compelling reason is because it reminds me to reflect on God, on His promises, even in the midst of a hectic life and daily challenges.
My prayer is that you reflect on God’s love for you in Jesus Christ. Now we see in part, but one day, we will see in full. What a beautiful truth to reflect on!
