Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.
1 John 3:2, English Standard Version
A few years ago, we went adventuring in Yellowstone National Park. One could spend days (perhaps weeks) in that place, and still feel they haven’t captured enough of God’s beautiful landscape. We left Cody, Wyoming our first morning before the sun. The goal was to hit Hayden Valley early — when the animals awaken from slumber, looking for breakfast. The valley was a vision. The stillness of the morning and the crisp air. Rolling, green prairie, patterned by pools of sapphire water.
When I see these beautiful clouds dotting the blue sky, my mind goes heavenward. Notice the same clouds are reflected below. The water isn’t a perfect reflection. There are often ripples and disturbances that cloud or overshadow the image. And yet, the source always prevails.
I started thinking of what we reflect when I pulled up this photo. We are to be image bearers on earth– reflecting the love, grace and goodness of God. Because of our flesh, there are times when that image is not a direct reflection. Debris, in the form of idols, distractions and all kinds of sin, pollutes our appearance. Often, our reflection is muddied by the things of this world and the desires of the flesh.
The very best news here is that all our imperfections were reconciled at the cross.
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Galatians 2:20 (ESV)
Our image is one that was won for us when Jesus took our place and gave His life so we would be saved. Because of Jesus, the reflection is Him. May we keep that in mind as we live our life as children redeemed.
