“O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.”
Psalm 63:1 New Living Translation
These words were spoken by David when he was in the desert of Judah, during a difficult time in David’s life. Most of us are familiar with a parched land, as our country has been in a record-setting heat wave with extreme temperatures that are dangerous to life. Making sure you stay hydrated is important to keeping cool, and it’s often more enjoyable if you get to drink a very tasty beverage.
Just as you seek out a glass of cool water or a frosty drink to quench your thirst, your soul also needs to be refreshed with water that never evaporates. Even on days when life seems like a sweltering desert and you feel alone in the heat and dust, God is there and ready to shower you with His abundant living water found in His word and in prayer. The refreshment you receive from time spent in His presence leads to an oasis that is green, lush and never dries up, even during your most desperate times.
God wants you to devote time with Him in all your phases of life, whether you are flourishing or are thirsty for peace and serenity. Once you have soaked up His living water, remember to be thankful for His abundance and the pools of blessing He has provided.
“Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
for he satisfies the thirsty
and fills the hungry with good things.”
Psalm 107:8-9 New International Version
