Up in the Air

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.”
Eccles. 3:11, ESV
We were on an airplane this past weekend. Just a few years ago, I could hardly step on a plane. I was always gripped by panic, anxiety and fear. God performed an overhaul on my life and that has since changed (all praise to Him). But I was reminded – as we encountered turbulent air – that the pilots (and the plane) are in control. I suppose our life often feels like that. We don’t always know what’s ahead. So many things are up in the air. It’s easy to slip into that fear-based mode. The amazingly-simple reality for us as Believers is: we don’t have to worry. Our past does not have to define our future. Today’s anxieties do not have to consume us. Our future is secure.
It seems like there should be a catch, right? That’s how the world works. That’s why it can be hard for us to fully grasp a love like this. God’s love is unconditional. He continues to show us His great love and faithfulness with each passing day. He created this beautiful place and every intricately woven, wonderfully-made creature. He made us in His image with great plans and hopes. In His infinite wisdom, He knew we were in dire need. So, in the greatest act of love EVER, He sent His son to die for us. HE took our place. WE are redeemed. There is no greater love. Period.
Why then, do we continue to doubt? Why do we struggle to surrender our fears? How is it that we so quickly forget?
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”
Psalm 27:1, ESV
We see David process through this very thing in several of his Psalms. It is not a coincidence that we were given these words. THE Word that is. Yet again, God knew we needed constant reminders of His enduring love, faithfulness and sovereignty. I pray that we wake up each morning, releasing control and placing our trust back in the hands of the Author and Perfecter of our journey.
