Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.– Psalm 1:1-3, English Standard Version
Ancient roots dive deep into dusty soil. This is the high desert prairie, after all – water is not to be taken for granted. But the massive tree digs deep, drawing all it needs for life from below the surface. In the storms, in the raging wind of this open country, this behemoth is rooted. This tree has seen some things. It has withstood the weather, the droughts, all that this rough country can throw at it. But it does not wither. It stands, deeply rooted.
Where is your source? Life swirls. Who you are above the surface is one thing. It is all important. But under the surface, behind the scenes of your daily life, where are you rooted? Go to the Word of our Lord – because deep roots will not be touched by the frost. When life is swirling, return to, meditate upon what our God speaks. Because it is this that gives life, that is a source that will never run out.
