This is a picture of a trough,used for mining, at the Glenn Cove Inn gift shop on Pikes Peak. At this particular trough you pay for the privilege of trying to find some treasure. The seeker is given a bag of dirt that they pour into the sifter. As the water washes away the dirt gems may appear. 
When I first saw this trough I thought it was for panning for gold. Yet when I looked into the pure clean water coming down, I saw nothing. It was just water. I didn’t even know whether it was safe to drink. It was pretty to look at, but otherwise I had no use for it. I admit I am not the type of person who spends money on a bag of dirt, to sift through, in hopes of finding something shiny. To my children I am simply no fun.
“Take my instruction instead of silver,
and knowledge rather than choice gold,
for wisdom is better than jewels,
and all that you may desire cannot compare with her.”

Humanity has spent its existence searching for treasure in all the wrong places. Actually, mankind typically searches for the wrong kind of treasure altogether. Sparkly stones are pretty to look at, and sometimes even have useful functions, but they do nothing for us eternally. I can practically picture God shaking his head as He sees us digging for pretty rocks deep in the earth.
God tells us to use that kind of fervor to dig into His Word. He wants us to find His wisdom, instruction, and knowledge there. Would you pay for a bag of dirt, to sift through, if you thought there would be a gem of God’s wisdom in it? We have easier access to God’s Word now than in any time in history. Realize the treasure that is waiting for you there and spend time each day digging for it. Nothing else you desire will compare with what you find there.
