“The voice of the Lord twists the oaks
and strips the forests bare.”
Psalm 29:9a New International Version
This tree once thrived in a valley along the river, until a massive flood washed through the canyon. Although its roots held them firmly in the ground, the flood stripped the bark from the outside. Unable to process nutrients from the water nearby, the tree died, and today its skeletal trunk gives testimony to its former grandeur.
The aspen trees nearby are green and thriving. While this lone tree once stood on its own deep roots, the aspen is part of a stand of many trees, connected by a shallow network of roots just under the ground. A single network of roots can nourish a stand of many trees.
“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.“
John 15:3 English Standard Version
When we stand on our own roots, apart from Christ Jesus, it’s a matter of time before a calamity washes us away. The legacy of what once was may continue to stand for a time, but eventually it will be gone as well.
However, when we stand connected to Jesus through the Holy Spirit, we thrive. We can weather the trials of life because our foundation is secure. And when the trial is past, there is reason for joy!
“You will go out in joy
and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and hills
will burst into song before you,
and all the trees of the field
will clap their hands.”
Isaiah 55:12 English Standard Version
Dear Lord, there are times when we are weary – when it seems our trials are piling one on another. Bring us comfort and peace with the knowledge that you are sovereign over all, and that you will always keep us close to your heart, no matter what. Amen.
